KAYAK INSTRUCTION

KAYAK ESSENTIALS CLINIC
At Eastern Mountain Sports we are dedicated to making kayaking fun and available for all to experience. We do this by making sure our stores are stocked with our favorite selection of kayaks and accessories and that our staff is friendly and knowledgeable. In addition to this The Kayak School is excited to introduce an "Introduction to Kayak" series that will help take this process one step further by combining an instructor's seasoned outfitting advice with a how to "on the water" component.
PRIMARY STROKES PADDLE CLINIC
Are you interested in dipping your toes into some water based adventuring? If so, this is the class for you! In Primary Strokes our American Canoe Association (ACA) and British Canoe Association (BCU) certified instructors will introduce you to fundamental kayaking skills like proper boat and PFD fit, carrying and lifting techniques, efficient forward and reverse strokes, and several maneuvering strokes including sweeps, draws, and rudders.

2 DAY FAST-TRACK
The best way to become a competent open water kayaker is to take a 2 Day Fasttrack course that combines flatwater skills with an open water experience. We have taken our two most popular classes and paired them together to do just that. When we take the curriculum from our Kayak 101: Strokes and Rescues Class and apply these fresh skills to our Kayak 202: Ocean Motion and Movement Class we see our students rapidly transform into confident paddlers.
101: STROKES AND RESCUES
This full day class goes several steps beyond Primary Strokes clinic. We will review and refine basic strokes and introduce wet exit and reentry technique. Your ACA or BCU certified instructor will demonstrate and teach several reentry methods including T-rescues, bow rescues and paddle float rescue.
Our Strokes and Rescues course takes place on a protected and calm water body to enhance your learning experience. At the conclusion of this class you will be ready to join our 200 level "Motion and Movement" series courses.

102: FLATWATER MOTION & MOVEMENT
This full day class is designed to explore and expand the relationship between your body, boat and blade. With these tools you will learn the fundamental processes of boat control, body position, boat edging, and paddle strokes.

We will also look at advanced strokes and the ability to quickly maneuver your boat. This will ultimately prepare you to be a more efficient paddler and enhance your experience on the water.
103: OCEAN MOTION & MOVEMENT
This class is designed for those paddlers who want to venture into the ocean with increased stroke efficiency, better seamanship skills and boat control. Ocean Motion and Movement is an extension of our Strokes and Rescues course and takes place on open water. We begin the day with some planning and quickly set out on our journey across the bay.

104: KAYAK SURFING
Imagine yourself sliding gracefully down the face of a glassy green wave with the sun shining down and the spray flying up all around you; big smile on your face. Sounds pretty good, right?

The EMS Kayaking School can help you have this marvelous experience by teaching you the skills and techniques which make surfing kayaks possible.
ROCK HOPPING
So much of the action on the sea happens along the edges, where the rocks, beaches and shorelines meet the dynamic and sometimes sneaky ocean. It is a place just waiting to be explored by you and your kayak, and EMS Kayak School instructors are here to help you. Most of the strokes taught in programs like Strokes and Rescues or Ocean motion and Movement become essential in this class, allowing you too properly and progress into those more challenging environments.
SURFING THE LONG BOAT
Have you ever had one of those days where the waves start to come up just as you are getting ready to land at the end of a long paddling day? Would you like to learn how to land and launch through that stuff? If so, you have come to the right place.
TIDAL TUTORIAL
New England is blessed with some of the finest river mouths and harbors in the United States. It also has some very strong tidal currents in some of these same spots. It so happens these are really exciting and challenging places to paddle with the right skills, experience and attitude.
OUTDOOR ROLLING
Doing a kayak roll is quite simply the best form of self rescue. It is quick, effective and looks cool. Rolling is one of those more advanced skills that demands the help and guidance of an experienced instructor. Our ACA Instructors are trained to guide you through the process of learning and mastering your kayak roll.
POOL ROLLING
Quite simply, rolling your kayak to an upright position is the best self rescue method, period. It is one of those counterintuitive skills progressions, however, that demands a skilled instructor with a good eye and deep understanding of the mechanics of various rolling styles to smooth the learning process. So we try to make your learning experience as easy as possible in a warm pool with rolling-friendly kayaks and knowledgeable ACA and BCU certified instructors.
